CASE BY Deloitte

DMart is one of the largest chain of supermarkets in India. It aims to offer customers a wide range of basic home and personal products under one roof. Each DMart store stocks home utility products – including food, toiletries, beauty products, garments, kitchenware, bed linen, home appliances and more – available at competitive prices that their customers appreciate. At present, they have presence in 234 locations spread across 72 cities and 11 states across India.

In the fiscal 2019, the company has reported a mere 2% sales growth. They are witnessing stagnating sales growth year on year and have hired us to help them in identifying the issue and propose ways to boost sales growth. What would you recommend?

Additional information (To be provided only on request)

  • Sales growth for DMart slowed down to ~2% while the industry is growing at ~4%.
  • Client wishes to achieve double digit growth targets.
  • Store operating costs have remained flat throughout the years.
